Countdown to Surgery

Well, here we are. We made it. Tomorrow is surgery day.

On Monday We made our way to John Hopkins All Children’s. We got acquainted with our new hospital and team, Milo made himself right at home cruising the halls with a blue car and yelling to anyone that would listen for some attention.

After a Covid test, medical history, and vitals we went home.

We were back to the hospital again today and met our surgeon for an endoscopy, bronchoscopy, labs and catscan. I sat down with Dr. Smithers to go over what he found and as much of a game plan as possible, some will be changed when he gets in there.

Jon and I will take Milo to the hospital at 6am for a 7:30 start time. The surgery should last 8-12 hours.

Dr. Smithers will enter through the same place on his side as his original repair as well as his neck. This will allow him to see things as well as possible and preserve his nerves.

They will ressect the stricture, repair tracheomalacia, and will assess some other areas.

Dr. Smithers is very confident. Although Milo has a complicated case the good news is the stricture itself is very short (although there is a lot of scar tissue and damaged wall) so he has lots of esophagus to work with. He was also pleased with the GE junction (where the stomach and esophagus meet). As many TEF patients he sees the stomach pull up.

It’s going to be a long (hopefully) boring day. And then we move on to our next phase, recovery.

And while we wait at the hospital Chuck will be at the beach with grandma and grandpa. Hopefully having an amazing day. She deserves it.
